Don't keep it to yourself! Add it Here. The humor, the characters, and the bigger picture of the play are all reasons why I sincerely enjoyed this play. I related to some of the characters, therefore making the story more relatable and understandable. I enjoyed the deep themes, symbols, and lessons that made me think to see the bigger picture Simon was trying to create.

All these elements create a great book that I highly recommend to readers that enjoy similar things. May 03, Abigail Kay rated it it was amazing. I throughly enjoyed this play, my initial reaction was an absurd, ironic, well put together comedic play.

Neil Simon's is brilliant in this play, as he alludes to many different literally works for references. His writing style remind me much of Oscars Wildes and the absurd over the top commentary on societal issues. Neil even makes many allusions to Oscar Wilde as the two women Oscar and Felix date are named Gwendolyn and Cecily, a direct similarity to Wildes play The Importance of Being Ernest I throughly enjoyed this play, my initial reaction was an absurd, ironic, well put together comedic play.

I also thought it was intentional to name the main character Oscar, after Oscar Wilde because they do reflect each other in many ways personally wise. The book was fast to read, and hard to put down. The over the top statements always kept me laughing and the juxtaposition of the two man characters kept me engaged. The plot line even though comedic had a serious undertone that address many real relationship struggles, depression, and two extremes of order and disorder and their effects.

This play was marvelously written and one I would recommend to anyone in the future to read. The Odd Couple by Neil Simon is a great play. The give and take of relationships is what makes them strong. Of course Simon does it in his customary humor.

He makes his characters real, with emotions and foibles. I think The Odd Couple is a statement on compromise—and friendship. Although neither Oscar nor Felix could change their habits or egos completely, Simon does show how each has changed slightly by the end of the play. They might not be able to live together, but the gentlemen remain friends.

For instance, Olive hosts a Trivial Pursuit game night instead of poker, and the trivia questions plus the girls' cheeky commentary add some extra hilarity to the friendly Act I vibe. The group of girl friends themselves are a dynamic, colorful bunch, and Florence and Olive's friendship is touching in an entirely different way from Oscar's and Felix's, though the contrasting personalities shenanigans are just as funny. Absolutely sparkling humor.

Highly recommended! Dec 11, Drake Shadwell rated it it was amazing. I can often recognize the humor in the text and appreciate it, but this play had me giving voice to my elation. As I imagined actors running about a stage, yelling at one another, throwing these and the fantastic timing of lines, I couldn't help but laugh like I was there in the audience.

The utter ridiculousness of the situation, combined with how absolutely rationale Neil Simon makes it seem is beautiful. How he has crafted the story in such a way that you can't believe where you have arrived, but you understand exactly how you got there!

I would love to see a production of this and would love even more to play in it! Sep 24, Alexander rated it it was ok Shelves: plays. Definitely a dated play but I love how Felix and Oscar's roommate friendship feud develops and how Felix is allowed to show emotions in a way that man of the time wasn't necessarily allowed to show. It is nice to see a straight male character feel heartbreak and be all upset about a divorce. Thought it might be written as a joke, it is nice to see how much a straight male character from a s play miss his children even though he sees them every day.

It makes him human and something I don't really see in a lot of plays from this time. This being said, the play handles suicide horribly. People in the comments call it funny but it is definitely an older comedy style comedy that I don't find too funny A three act play telling the story of what happens when neat freak Felix is kicked out of his house by his wife and stays with happy go lucky, slovenly Oscar.

A short engaging read. Recommend for any fan of modern literature or playwriting. View 1 comment. Nov 19, Charlie Lee rated it liked it Shelves: plays.

After reading Neil Simon's wonderful farce, Rumours, I eagerly anticipated the work considered his magnum opus Surely the guy's a comedic genius?

Well, it was alright. Certainly not my favourite of his plays. The reversed gender dynamics of the two friends are not consistently funny, even annoying at times. The first act was much stronger too. The dark humour around Felix attempting to commit suicide was by far the funniest part of the play and the male banter during the first poker match was After reading Neil Simon's wonderful farce, Rumours, I eagerly anticipated the work considered his magnum opus The dark humour around Felix attempting to commit suicide was by far the funniest part of the play and the male banter during the first poker match was incredibly realistic, yet funny.

Then the 2nd act came and Felix turned into the housewife for some cheap laughs What a shame Some 20 years after the success of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, the author decided to write a female version of his hit play. Felix and Oscar have been changed to Florence and Olive. The four poker playing guys are now four Trivial Pursuit playing ladies, and the Pigeon Sisters have been transformed into the Constanzuela brothers, from Barcelona.

There is a lot of new humor, but still quite a few lines remain from the original Florence: "That's not spaghetti, it's linguini! This is a fun version, which probably works better on the stage than on paper, but I enjoyed it.

May 28, Lauren Hancock rated it it was ok. This one was not one of my favorites, which was a bit surprising to me because it's probably the Neil Simon play I've heard of the most. It was fun and quick, and it had its moments, but I didn't connect as much with the characters or plot.

The conceit of the poker game felt, to me, like it slowed the story down and added extra weight--surprising because Simon is usually so good at jumping right into the action and not providing unnecessary backstory or slow context.

I'm thinking in terms of staging for high schoolers and an all-ages audience. Pros: wide range of emotions for the main characters; simple set; could easily be double cast; enough humor to balance out the tragic parts; no long monologues; opportunity to develop physical comedy; female leads Cons: would need to edit out the suicide stuff, which is far too glib; would likely need to edit out some of the sex stuff too; might be on the short side of running time I'm thinking in terms of staging for high schoolers and an all-ages audience.

I can't shake Walter Matthau as Oscar and all are pretenders to the throne, including Nathan Lane who is a bit too shrill for the part of a sportswriting slob and lout again, the Matthau imprint on the role is hard to get out from under. Dec 04, Fatemeh Haghdoust added it. I really liked the play and enjoyed reading it!

It was the first play I was reading written by Neil Simon and I will read more of his works in the future. I was really interested in the way Oscar showed some parts of his seemingly carefree and indifferent character to be the other way around; Also, the way the two opposite people in character living next to each other in an eight room apartment, unable to tolerate each other.

Sep 25, Eileen rated it it was ok. For a comedy, the first scene is a little dark with all the talk of suicide. I'm not one who thinks suicide is something to joke about.

Probably a director could make the rest of the jokes funnier. The situation is humorous, and it would be a fun play to see, but I've read other plays I liked better.

Jul 14, Jeanne rated it really liked it. Two kings. Maybe he's in his office locked in the john again. Did you know that Felix was once locked in the john overnight? He wrote out his entire will on half a roll of toilet paper. What a nut. Don't play with your chips. I'm not playing, I'm counting. Leave me alone, will you? If you stop playing with your chips. I hate winners playing with their chips. It's my house, Vinnie. You want to play with your chips, go ahead, darling.

I'm in for a quarter. Won't you look at your cards first? What for? Who gets the Pepsi? I get a Pepsi. Murray the policeman gets a warm Pepsi. Still didn't fix the refrigerator? It's been two weeks. Temper, temper. If I wanted nagging, I'd go back with my wife. What do you got?

I got brown sandwiches and green sandwiches. Which one do you want? What's the green? It's either very new cheese or very old meat. I'll take the brown. You're not going to eat that, are you?

I'm hungry. His refrigerator's been out of order for two weeks. I saw milk standing in there that wasn't in a bottle. Eat, Murray. I got six cards.

It figures. I got three aces. You know who makes good sandwiches? Ever taste his cream cheese and pimento on date nut bread? Make up your mind Oscar, you got beer all over my glasses! You got it on the chips. You got it all over me now! Are we going to stand here or play some poker? You got it on the suits. Don't put it in the middle of the table. Put it on the side. Wipe the cards. Get the beer. How can you play like this?
